Kangra

Kangra is a charming town located just 17 km away from Dharamshala. Kangra is one of Himachal's most beautiful valley which rolls down the southern edge of the magnificent Dhauladhar range. Kangra is famous all over the world for its astounding beauty. The gentle slopes of this range are covered with lush green forests of pine, orchards, tea gardens and terraced fields and overlooks a gushing stream known as Banganga. Kangra valley is surrounded by splendid valleys and dotted with several ancient shrines, thus offering as a famous tourist destination. Once the ancient capital of a powerful hill state, Kangra was known for its magnificent temples and as a thriving centre for arts. Kangra is known for the exquisite Pahari style of miniature painting and is still a busy place of pilgrimage.

Kangra Temple

The main tourist attraction in Kangra is the Jwalamukhi temple. This ancient temple was built against a wooded spur and has a dome that was gilded by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Nadaun was built as a capital by Raja Sansar Chand on the river Beas. Nadaun soon emerged as a centre of arts and the royal palace still has beautiful paintings. Nadaun is a quiet, charming place for an extended weekend or for a spot of angling in River Beas. 

Sujanpura Tira is located further upstream on the banks of the Beas river. This city is the famous capital city of Raja Sansar Chand. Located amidst idyllic surroundings, the temples of Narbadeshwar, Gauri Shanker and Murli Manohar built by the King are still adorned with fine wall paintings.
