Rumbak
About Rumbak

Rumbak is a high altitude (4050 M) tiny little village of 9 households set amidst rolling mountains & green valleys in the Hemis National Park. Often referred to as the Snow Leopard capital of the world, Rumbak is a great spot for Snow Leopord sightings in the winter months of December to February. The other commonly found animals around Rumbak are Urials, blue sheep, Wolves. Rumbak is situated in a valley, with striking peaks around, all the houses are clustered on a side of the mountain and surrounded with fields. Leh (5 hrs of walking) is the neighboring city with hospitals , high schools, markets, & offices.

Rumbak village in Ladakh, a favoured trekking destination in Jammu & Kashmir presents a rich cultural tapestry which consists Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, paintings and dragon dancers. The region is steeped in Buddhist culture as the trail crosses a stark jagged scenery interrupted with prayer flags fluttering in the breeze.

Rumbak Village is situated at an altitude of about 4900 meters and is 35 km from Leh. People of this region mostly depend on tourism for their livelihood. Some have opened trekking camps while others have converted their houses into guesthouses.

The Rumbak Valley offers excellent opportunities for bird watching, including several Tibetan species not common in other parts of India. Birds present here include Red-billed Chough ,Brown Accentor, Himalayan Snowcock, Tickell's Leaf Warbler, Streaked Rose finch, Tibetan Snow finch, Chukar, Robin Accentor ,Fork-tailed Swift, and the Fire-fronted Serin.

A trek through the wilderness of Rumbak Valley would let you come across a number of hermit villages ,ancient monasteries and untouched vast landscapes.

 
How to Reach Rumbak

The closest motorable road is till Zingchen, a 2 house hamlet just outside the Hemis NP. From here , Rumbak is about a 4-5 hour of easy trekking. Back track the route on your way back or do a 6-7 hour trek towards Stok village on the other side of Stok Pass (4900 M). Zingchen & Stok are both about 25 kms from Leh.

Getting in to Leh

By Air- Direct flights from New Delhi to Leh fly all year long.

By Road- Leh has good connectivity with Manali (473 Kms) and Srinagar (434 Kms). Roads are open only till October and it takes about 2 days for a one-way journey.
