Martam
About Martam

Martam is a scenic Himalayan village, tucked in a quiet corner of West Sikkim, with amazing views of Mt. Kanchenjungha. The place is generally known for its pristine village life and beautiful natural surroundings. Although located near popular tourist destinations like Bermiok, Uttarey and Rinchenpong, Martam is still far from the maddening tourist rush. This little village is also famous for its thriving flora and fauna species and is home to some of the most beautiful birds of Sikkim.

Martam is a sparsely populated village relying on agriculture, and has carpets of paddy fields with the magnificent Himalayan ranges on the border.

A day tour to Temi Tea garden is also admired by the tourists to Martam. Drive for around two hours from the resort towards south Sikkim, to locate the sole tea garden of Sikkim, Temi Tea Garden. A tour of the Temi tea factory is also worth enough, where the processing of tea leaves into tea can be watched by the tourists

Fambong Lo Wild Life Sanctuary
A day-trek can be enjoyed into the Fambong Lo Wild Life Sanctuary along the forest area of the village featuring varieties of trees and vegetation. While trekking the sight of some beautiful birds, butterflies and some wildlife, which include monkeys, barking deer, caveats, pheasants, mountain goats, wild rabbits, porcupine and more can be enjoyed. There is also a lake and a viewing tower on the hilltop which offers a majestic view of the Kanchenjunga range. After leaving the forest, one can walk along the Bhutia villages and visit the local monastery.

Lodging and dining facilities in Martam

Martam Village Resort offers excellent accommodation at Martam in 14 thatched cottages built in traditional style to combine with the surrounding village. The cottages have twin bedded rooms with large picture windows framing the spectacular countryside. Each room has attached bath with modern facilities. Great care has been taken to combine the resort into the village, to maintain the ethnic style and culture of the area. To remain rustic, yet, provide for a pleasant and comfortable stay. The rooms do not have any TV because the resort wants to encourage outdoor activities associated with nature.

The Martam Village Resort occupies a lovely spot and is bound by forest covered hills of the Phambongla Wild Life Sanctuary.14 traditionally built thatched cottages combine with the village houses and have twin bedded rooms with large picture windows framing the countryside. In the dining hall, besides the regular Indian, Chinese and Continental cuisine, guests can enjoy forest produce such as ferns, nettles, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, etc., gathered by the locals. The local drink chang is also served in freshly cut bamboo ‘glasses’. The resort also conducts religious teachings and meditations, Martam is immersed in natural splendor and has many exquisite places around like the Phambongla Wild Life Sanctuary, monasteries of Rumtek, the exciting capital Gangtok and sleepy villages everywhere.

Things to do in Martam

Enjoy a nature walk along the picturesque scenic landscape of the Martam village. One can also hire a local guide who will explain different herbs and plants used by the village folks in their daily lives. Observe the farming technique and the animal husbandry practice of the villagers.

One can also spend some time by trying hand in angling at the rivers or streams with bamboo fishing rods. One can also organize picnic by the riverside. There are also arrangements of mountain cycles to move around the village.

The serene surrounding of the village resort is perfect for conducting meditation, retreat or religious courses. One can also invite the Buddhist teachers to their place to offer an introduction into Buddhism.

The quaint village of Martam is situated in East Sikkim is about 34 km from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. Martam can be reached from Rangpo via Ranipul and Rumtek
