About Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is located about 50 kms north east of the Thiruvananthapuram district in Nedumangad talik. The catchment area of the Peppara Dam constructed across the Karamana River, was declared as a sanctuary in 1983. About 13 tribal settlements are residing in the sanctuary, 11 of them are located in the Athirumala section and 2 are located in the Thodayar section. This sanctuary covers an area of 52 square kms. The vegetation here consists of the hilly terrain at the 100 m to 1717 m above sea level, southern hilltop tropical evergreen forests at 1000 m above sea level, on less favourable soil and climatic conditions, west coast evergreen forests at the riparian areas. The southern moist deciduous mixed forests covers 60% of the tract along the lower slopes.

The major wildlife animals found in this sanctuary are the Elephant, Gaur, Sambar, Barking deer, Wild boar, Tiger, Panther, Wild dog, Malabar squirrel, Lion-tailed macaque, Mouse deer and Nilgiri langur. Besides this, various reptiles are also found in this park like King cobra, python and a variety of moths and butterflies. Various birds are also found in this sanctuary like Darter, little cormorant, pied kingfisher and egret.

By Air:
The nearest airport: is located at Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum which is about 55 kms. 

By Rail:
The nearest railway station is located at Thiruvananthapuram.

By Road:
This wildlife sanctuary can be easily reached from Vithura on the Thiruvananthapuram- Ponmudi Road.
