Day 01: Ahmedabad - Vijaynagar (about 155 km / 3½ hours)
Travel from Ahmedabad to the Roda Temples, built around the 8th century and set off the tourist trail, and onward to the ruins of 16th century Hindu and Jain temples in the Polo forests. These forests are inhabited by the Garasia Adivasi tribe. Stay at a family run heritage homestay/hotel at Vijaynagar.

Day 02: Ahmedabad - Poshina (about 75 km / 1½ hours)
Travel from Vijaynagar to Poshina, calling in on the way at the 1062-1134AD Jain temple complex of Kumbharia - the temples boast stunning marble carvings. Poshina is a village in the heart of a tribal area inhabited largely by Garasia tribal people. Just outside Poshina is a shrine where tribal groups offer votive terracotta figures - scores of terracotta horses stand testimony to this ritual. In the village, you can watch potters and silversmiths at work. Stay at a family run heritage hotel.

Day 03: Poshina
Tour the tribal villages of this region in the Aravalli foothills Stay at a family run heritage hotel in Poshina village.

Day 04: Poshina - Dasada (about 215 km / 4½ hours)
Travel from Poshina to Radhanpur where a community museum offers information about the pastoral groups of northern Gujarat like the Ahirs, Rabaris and Jaths. Continue to Dasada village. Dasada's Mirs are a semi-nomadic community that works as agricultural labour. Colourfully dressed and sporting chunky ornaments, this group's forte is beadwork. At Dasada and its nearby villages you can meet pastoral groups like the Rabaris and the Bharwads. Stay at Rann Riders.

Day 05: Dasada
Drive in the salt desert of the Little Rann of Kutch - visit the salt works, the Wild Ass Sanctuary and bird-rich wetlands. Jhinjawada is a historic walled village at the edge of the desert with remains of a 12th century fort and an old stepwell. Stay at Rann Riders.

Day 06: Dasada - Kutch (about 350 km / 7 hours)
Travel from Dasada to Bhuj, visiting Ahir, Rabari and craft villages enroute. Just north of Bhuj, the Kutch Wilderness Kamp offers a splendid location by the Rudramata lake.

Day 07: Kutch
Visit the villages of the Meghwals and the Islamic pastoral groups (Mutwas, Jaths, etc). Though Kutch is now a big tourist magnet, some of these villages still retain their traditional culture. Stay at Kutch Wilderness Kamp.

Day 08: Kutch

Day 09: Kutch - Jamnagar (about 325 km / 7 hours)
Travel from Kutch to Jamnagar. Stay at Hotel President.

Day 10: Jamnagar - Dwarka (about 135 km / 2½ hours)
Travel onwards from Jamnagar to Dwarka, visiting the stunning 12th century Rukmini Temple. Near Dwarka, you can visit the houses of Bhopa Rabaris who are adept at applique and embroidery. Stay at a good hotel.

Day 11: Dwarka - Gir (about 250 km / 5 hours)
Travel to the Barda hills where you can see interesting temples like the ruins of the Gop temple which is said to date from the 6th century making it one of India's older free standing structural temples and the 12th century Ghumli temple. Continue to Gir Wildlife Sanctuary. Stay at Gir Birding Lodge, which enjoys an enviable location at the edge of the sanctuary.

Day 12: Gir
Safari in the Gir forests to look for the Asiatic lion and other wildlife. In the afternoon visit the Maldhari pastoral settlements and the houses of the Siddi community, a group that has its origins in African lands.

Day 13: Gir - Sayla (about 235 km / 5 hours)
From Gir, travel to Sayla via the historic city of Junagadh and the Buddhist caves of Khambalida. Stay at the Bell Guest House, a heritage homestay.

Day 14: Sayla - Jambughoda (about 275 km / 5 hours)
Visit the 12th century Navlakha Temple at Sejakpur near Sayla. Proceed via the Champaner-Pavagadh archaeological site to the Jambughoda forests. Stay at a heritage property.

Day 15: Jambughoda
Visit the Rathwa villages near Jambughoda. The Rathwas have a tradition of ritualistic painting called pithoro. Stay at Jambughoda.

Day 16: Jambughoda - Chhota Udepur  (about 40 km / 1 hours)
Proceed to Chhota Udepur, a town surrounded by Rathwa tribal hamlets set on the surrounding hills along the Gujarat-Madhya Pradesh border. Attend a tribal haat (market). Stay at a heritage property.

Day 17: Chhota Udepur - Saputara (about 320 km / 7 hours)
From Chhota Udepur travel south to Saputara in the Dang forests of the Sahyadri range. Stay at a good hotel.

Day 18: Saputara
Spend two days exploring the villages of the Gamits, Kunbis, Bhils, Warli and other tribal groups in the Dang forests. Stay at a good hotel.

Day 19: Saputara
Spend two days exploring the villages of the Gamits, Kunbis, Bhils, Warli and other tribal groups in the Dang forests. Stay at a good hotel.

Day 20: Saputara - Vadodara (about 290 km / 6 hours)
Proceed to Vadodara airport for return flight.
