Tsarap River
About Tsarap River

Tsarap River or the Tsarap Chu , is a river which is 182 kilometres (113 mi) long, Tsarap Riverforms the eastern part of the Zanskar valley, in the Ladakh region of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The Tsarap Chu starts high up in the Himalayas and lies in about 4800m. Cutting it´s path through the Zanskar Mountain Range, the river journey will take us through difficult Whitewater and past Monasteries like Phukthal.

The River joins the Zanskar in Padum and will take us down to the convergence with the Indus past eremite places and relaxing beaches, some challenging whitewater but, mainly big wave trains before we reach some big whitewater on the lower reaches of the Indus.

Geography of Tsarap River

The Tsarap River has its source in the glaciers near Pankpo La Pass at the border of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. After rising from its source, the Tsarap River flows southwest up to Sarchu, a camping site at the Leh-Manali Highway, here the Tsarap River joins a confluent of three rivers of Yunan, Lingti and Sarchu River. At village Purne, the Tsarap River is connected by Kargyag River which originates near Shingo La pass. Then the Tsarap River flows down in the main Zanskar valley, through the towns of Jamyang Lang, Chia, Mone, Tichip and Dorzong. The river then passes a convergence with its tributary, the Stod River, at Padum, the capital of Zanskar. Together, these two rivers form the Zanskar River, which is a tributary of the Indus River.

The Tsarap River contributes to the minimal agricultural production of the Zanskar valley, mostly to the lower areas of Chia, by providing irrigation to the fields of barley, wheat, buckwheat and peas.Accessible in the summer, the Pensi La mountain pass which links Zanskar with rest of the country, receives heavy snowfall along with the other pass Zojila, which results in the valley is cut off during winter from rest of the state, and the river freezes during this season. The river source at Pankpo La near Sarchu lies 255 kilometres (158 mi) southeast from the nearest airport of Leh. The Tsarap River is well-known for adventure sports. Rafting events are organised in the Tsarap, Stod and the Zanskar rivers.

When visiting the area of Sarchu, one can also indulged in long walks along side of the river Tsarap Chu which is situated close to Sarchu. It also serves as a starting point for difficult trek into the Zanskar region of Ladakh.
