Nepal Trekking Useful Information

Trekking Season
October and November are the best months for trekking. The air is clear, the vegetation still lush after the monsoon, and both day and night temperatures are pleasant. December and January are colder (especially at higher altitudes) and generally dustier. High passes, like Thorong La on the Annapurna Circuit, can be closed and you need more equipment. Everest looks bare as it has very little snow cover. March and April are hazy, though in March, rhododendrons are particularly attractive. May is very hot and quite dusty and streams do not carry much water. The monsoons (June to Mid September) are wet, though you may get breaks of 3 or 4 days in the rain. Clouds can lift to give you some good mountain views. Equipment may feel a little damp. Weather in late September is unpredictable, but the trails are much less crowded, and hence, more pleasant. Leeches can be unpleasant in damper places.

Trekking permit:

A valid permit is required for certain areas, which we will obtain upon your arrival. We will require two working days and two passport size photographs. Permits are not required for the Annapurna, Everest and Langtang treks. However, conservation fees are required for these national parks.

Food and Water:

The trekking staff will take maximum care in respect of water. Water is boiled properly before preparing tea or coffee. We advise against drinking water from tea shops. The staff re-fills the water bottles during breakfast and dinner with properly treated water. Food on treks is wholesome and freshly prepared for each meal. The canned food is served rarely and is only used on long treks.

Altitude:

Acclimatization is important for the trekking above 3500 m. The trekking routines have been carefully designed to maximize your ability to acclimatize safely. We ascend slowly and ensure an adequate number of rest days. However, mountain sickness is still possible and the symptoms could be headache, nausea, lethargy and breathlessness. If any of the group members display any such symptoms then, a proper course of action will be taken. The tour leader will also advise thoroughly regarding the altitude and most of the problems prior to starting on trail.

First aid kit:

A first aid kit is provided on group treks. But, we also suggest you to bring the following supplementary items with you like Anti-diarrhoea tablets, blister pads, sterile plain and crepe bandages, tube of antiseptic cream, throat lozenges, decongestants/antihistamines, paracetamol or aspirin and personal medicines as prescribed by your physician.

Disposal of rubbish:

We recommend that each trekker should have a small bag during the trip. Each morning a small fire is lit for burnable rubbish. Any non-burnable or non-biodegradable rubbish should be carried back to Kathmandu and disposed off.

Money and valuable securities:

Always carry Nepalese rupees in small amount during your trek. The amount to be carried depends on the area and the duration of the trek. A guideline for this will be presented during the starting of the tour. Money will only be required for the purchase of soft or hard bottled drinks and souvenirs along the way. Other money and valuables should be kept in a safe deposit box in your hotel in Kathmandu.

Physical Fitness

This trek is suitable for average people who are moderately fit, thus no previous experience is required. To get condition for the trek, some physical fitness programs such as running, swimming, hiking is recommended before you embark on journey. Person suffering from pre-existing diseases must seek medical advice before considering the trek. While on the trek, it is common to experience some discomfort before being fully acclimatized.

No mountaineering experience is required as long as you are in your sound physical shape and have a sense of adventure, you will enjoy this trek.
