Imphal (Manipur)

Imphal is the capital of Manipur. Imphal was founded at the beginning of the 1st century AD. Imphal derives its name from "Yumpham" meaning homestead and is believed to be one of the oldest state capitals of the country.

Festivals of Imphal
Yaosang is celebrated in March on full moon night. The boys and girls dance the Thabal Chongba and sing in a circle in the moon light. May and June, the festivals are celebrated in honour of forest gods. Heikru Hitongba is non-religious festival, when there are boat races along a 16 m wide moat in narrow boats with large number of rowers.

Imphal has a lot to offer to the tourists visiting this state. Some of the tourist attractions in Imphal are the Shree Govindajee Temple (a pilgrimage as well as historic center of the Vaishnavite), Kaina (a sacred place of Hindus), Khwairamand Bazaar (a market place run by women), Manipur Zoological Garden, the beautiful Loktak Lake and Sendra Island. Besides, Langthabal, Moirang, Moreh, Phubala, Singda, Khongjom, Sahid Mandir, Khonghampat Orchidarium, Keibul Lamjao National Park, Sekta Archeological Living Museum, and the Manipur State Museum are also worth visiting places in Imphal.

How to reach Imphal
By Air:

Imphal, the capital of Manipur is well connected with Kolkata, Guwahati and other cities by air.

By Rail:

As there is no railway network in Manipur, so the nearest railway station to reach Imphal is Dimapur on the Northern Frontier Railway.

By Road:
