About Jain Temples of Jaisalmer

Jain Temples of Jaisalmer are located within the Jaisalmer Fort,is one of the essential tourist attractions in Jaisalmer Rajasthan. These temples are very old and high pilgrimage as well as archeological value is attached with these temples. On the walls of the temples, animal & human figures are there , carved in well-known Dilwara style.

The Jain temples were constructed in the 12th century. They are known for their wonderful work of art and architecture. The walls are built out of yellow sandstone and have intricate designs on them. The Jain temples echo a sense of peace and calmness. The field of the temple is decorated by an Amalak and a wonderful water vase that contains a lotus. Due to antisocial insurgency the temple was under ruins but Seth Tharu Shah rebuilt it in the year 1615. The idol of Parshvanath lies within the iner region of the temple. This idol is built out of black stone having multiple hoods in the shape of serpents.

These temples are constructed in the Dilwara style that is prominent all over the world for its architecture. The style got its name from the well-known 'Dilwara Temples' located on Mount Abu, a well-known Hill station and pilgrimage destination in Rajasthan. The Jain temples in the Jaisalmer Fort dates back to 12th and 15th centuries and are devoted to Rikhabdevji and Shambhavdev Ji, the well-known Jain hermits known as 'Tirthankars'. The Jain temples possess the idols of the gods Rikhabdevji and Sambhavnathji.Like all other structures in Jaisalmer, these temples are craved of yellow sandstones. The magnificently carves ornamentations on the wall will give you divine peace.

The temple complex is open through out the morning till 12noon, for the visitors. So try to get up a bit early or you might miss this magnificence. The Gyan Bhandar library attached to one of the Jain temples is also another tourist spot within the fort. It is said to have been the storeroom of a large number of texts and ancient scripts. These texts tell the story of the Jain temples.
