Singalila Ridge
About Singalila Ridge

The Singalila Ridge is a north-south running mountain ridge in northwestern West Bengal, India. The district of Ilam in Nepal falls on the western part of this ridge, and the northern ridge ends up in Sikkim, the Indian part of the Himalayas. It divides mountain ranges of West Bengal from other Himalayan ranges to its west. The two highest peaks of West Bengal, Sandakphu (3,636 m (11,929 ft)) and Phalut (3,600 m (11,800 ft)) are situated on the ridge. The Singalila National Park encompasses the ridge. It is well-known for its views of Mount Everest and Kanchenjunga. The trek from Manebhanjan to Sandakphu and Phalut is popular.

The four highest peaks are :
• Sabargram 3,543 m (11,624 ft)
• Tonglu 3,036 m (9,961 ft)
• Sandakfu 3,636 m (11,929 ft) - the highest point in West Bengal
• Falut 3,600 m (11,800 ft)

The ever green Singalila range spans across the borders of Sikkim, West Bengal and Nepal. Verdant valleys, dazzling lakes, gushing rivers, thick forests crowded with wildlife and birds illustrates this amazing mountain range. Yambong valley is one such treasure trove placed in a remote part of West Sikkim.

Trekking

The Singalila Ridge divides Sikkim from Eastern Nepal. It extends from Darjeeling all the way to Kangchenjunga to the North and affords the finest views of Kangchenjunga, at 8586 m the world's third highest mountain, as well as isolated views of Everest. The ridge is deeply forested with oak and rhododendron forest and has fantastic views of several well known peaks- Lhotse, Makalu, Everest, Chomolhari and Kangchenjunga.

Sikkim is one of India's most beautiful states which is located between India and Tibet, bordered by Nepal, Bhutan and West Bengal. The population is mainly Buddhist and with the very high rainfall experienced by the eastern Himalaya (nothing stands between Sikkim and the Bay of Bengal to stop the rain) making it very lush with a rich flora and fauna. Over 700 species of birds have been recorded in Sikkim and more than 4000 species of flowering plants.

The trek starts from the village of Nambu which is located at the base of the valley. Then Climbs through the Yambong valley, criss-crossing the Rimbi river and meandering through the densely forested slopes. While reaching at high point named Daphe Bhir amazing views of the Khangchendzonga and Everest ranges indicates. In spring time the whole slopes are converted into a riot of colour as the rhododendrons come in full bloom. The trek along the ridge has been a popular one since the days of the British Raj. This is a amusing walk through wonderful forests, gaining fabulous views of the high Himalayas.Wonderful flowers in spring but the best views are in Autumn.

The Singalila Ridge rises steadily form the steamy lowlands of the Indian plains to the magnificent, icy vastness of Kangchenjunga, at 8,586m the world’s third highest peak.

Lower Singalila Ridge
