About Tsongmo Lake

Tsongmo Lake or Changu Lake is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim, India, about 40 kilometres (25 mi) away from Gangtok at elevation of 3,780 m (12,400 ft) above see level and oval in shape, 1 Km long and fifteen meeter deep.The road to Nathu La passes the lake on north side. The Chinese border crossing is only some 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) east-northeast in a straight line, but some 18 kilometres by road.

Tsongmo Lake is one of the main reason why people visit Sikkim. Indian Postal Service released a memorial stamp on the lake on 6 November 2006.This glacial lake is located at an altitude of 3,780 m and around 25 miles away from Gangtok.

Tsongmo Lake lake freezes during the winter months. Best time to visit is Mid May to August. The area is controlled by the Indian Army and required special permission to visit the place.Heavy woolen cloths required to be worn throughout the year. Rides on Yaks are offered at the lake side. One can have tea and snacks at the lake side during the tourist season. It is advised to avoid traveling to Changu Lake those who have breathing problem due to shortage of air at this altitude.

 
Places to See at Tsongmo Lake

Nathu La
Nathu La is a mountain pass in the Himalayas. It connects the Indian state of Sikkim with China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. The other side of Nathula Pass is Chumbi Valley of Tibet. This mountainous pass is one of the oldest trading border posts connecting Tibet and India. The Nathula Pass is marked by Entrance gates of both countries (India and China) and military bunkers on both sides of the gates.

Babamandir
Baba Mandir near Tsongmo lake and Nathula Pass is a sightseeing place near Gangtok. This “mandir” or shrine is dedicated to “Baba” Harbhajan Singh, who was a soldier of the Indian Army. He died near the Nathula Pass in eastern Sikkim, India.

Location of Tsomgo Lake

Tsomgo Lake is located in the north eastern part of Sikkim. It is located about 35 km away from Gangtok on the Gangtok–Nathula highway, which makes a role of the erstwhile trade route from India to China. This lake has been worshipped as a holy lake by Sikkimese. The average depth of this lake is about 50 feet and 1 km long.

The cool and serene water harmonies with the wonderful scenery around it attract so many visitors. During the winter season, the lake would be in frozen condition. A moderate-sized temple of lord Shiva is present on the lakeshore. Many beautiful flowering plants like primula and other plantations like alpine add beauty to the lake.

How to Reach Tsongmo Lake

By Rail
The nearest railway Station is New Jalpaiguri Railway Station (NJP). From New Jalpaiguri Railway Station one has to drive to Gangtok nearly 130 kilometers. From Gangtok one has to drive to Tsomgo Lake and is nearly 42 kilometers from Gangtok.

By Road
Roads till Gangtok is national highway 31 A. There is about 130 kilometers drive to Gangtok from Siliguri. Tsomgo Lake is about 42 kilometers from Gangtok.

By Air
Bagdogra airport is the nearest and major airport. Gangtok is connected to Bagdogra airport by a daily helicopter service that operates only once a day and carries four passengers.
