successor of Jodha, who founded the city of Jodhpur. The city of
Bikaner spreads over an area of 38.10 square km, it is situated in the
north of Rajasthan at an elevation of 237 mts above sea level. Bikaner
is well-known for snacks and sweets.

          Bikaner is
well-known for its camel safaris, Karni Mata temple and superb fort.
In this temple thousands of holy rats are worshipped.
Previously, it was a main trade centre as it is situated on the
ancient caravan route which connects Central Asia and North India with
the seaports of Gujarat. As compared to
other cities of Rajasthan Bikaner seems quite bare in respect of
havellis and lakes. Rajasthani, Marwari, English and Hindi are the
common languages which are spoken in Bikaner.

The climate in Bikaner is moderate. In Summers the temperature is not
too hot. It is around 41.8º Celsius and in winters it is around 5º
Celsius. Bikaner, Jaisalmer and Jodhpur forms the desert triangle in
          the state of Rajasthan. |

                    History of Bikaner |

          |

          Bikaner
plays a prominent role in the history of Rajasthan. A Rajput prince
Rao Bika ji who was the descendent of Rao Jodha Ji, the founder of
Jodhpur founded his kingdom in Bikaner in 1459 AD. Bika Ji chose an
infertile land called "Jungladesh" and shaped it into an imposing city
called Bikaner. Bikaner has many wonderful buildings which are made of
reddish pink sandstone that transcends the adjoining barren
wilderness. The Royal Family still lives in a suite in
Lalgarh Palace which was now converted into a heritage hotel by them. |
