          The Camel 
          Festival is an event conducted by the Department of Tourism, Art and 
          Culture, Government of Rajasthan, every year in the month of January 
          in the beautiful city of Bikaner. The city of Bikaner is an exercise 
          in architecture.  
           
          The desert 
          town of Bikaner is located in the Northern part of Rajasthan. Desert 
          region's Folk dances and Music; add on to what is otherwise an 
          exclusive camel affair. Camels fascinate tourists from all over the 
          world with their movements. Charm and grace. In camel festival the 
          ships of the desert are seen at their best. A sight of extraordinary 
          camel activities like camel races, camel dances, and the bumpy, neck 
          shaking camel rides highly fascinates the viewers. The camels display 
          amazing footwork, dancing gracefully to the slightest direction of 
          their riders The two day festival is marked by different interesting 
          activities. Their displays and competitions accompany the color, music 
          and rhythm distinctive to a fair in Rajasthan. The jubilant skirt 
          swirling dancers, the awe-inspiring fire dance and the amazing 
          fireworks light up the fortified Desert City. The festivities reach to 
          the peak with a different sense as the well-known artists show a 
          medley of folk dances and songs. Finally, the festival concludes on a 
          fine note by wonderful display of sparkling fireworks which 
          illuminates the desert city of Bikaner.

          The 
          festival starts with the parade of beautifully ornamented camels. The 
          procession heads towards the open sand grounds. Here, the festivities 
          commence in earnest. The Camel Pageant is held on the first day 
          wherein the camel owners demonstrate their Camels' ornaments and 
          jewellery. Camel dance performances are also held. A competition for 
          best ornamented camel, fur cutting design, camel milking and the most 
          excellent camel hair cut is structured The camels show remarkable 
          footwork, dancing stylishly to the slightest direction of their 
          drivers. Colourful bridles, bejewelled necks, jingling anklets and 
          long, lanky camel darkness on dusky sands, cast a miraculous spell.In this festival tea and sweets prepared by camel milk are made 
          available to the visitors who are interested in enjoying them. 
           
          On the second day, the fleetest camels of the region take part in the 
          camel races. The competition is violent as the best camels compete for 
          the honors. Thousands of eager tourists and locals cheer the 
          favorites.  
           
          On both days, the evening ends with a appointment with the well-known 
          folk artists of Rajasthan. The jubilant, skirt swirling dances, the 
          awe inspiring fire dances and many other equally exciting performances 
          entertain the visitors. The grand finale is a wonderful display of 
          fireworks which illuminates the desert city of Bikaner.

          Bikaner was 
          always an unapproachable land Positioned in the heart of the desert 
          belt, Before the arrival of modern motor vehicles the survival of the 
          people of this region depended on the 'Ship of the desert' - the 
          Camel. The camels of this region were well-known for their endurance 
          as well as their power and attractiveness.  
           
          In fact, the Bikaner army had an Exclusive camel corps called the 
          Ganga Risala which took active part in both the World Wars. The Ganga 
          Risala was a Camel unit in the army even after the independence and it 
          took part in Indo-Pak wars. Bikaner also boasts of the only Camel 
          breeding center in India.  
           
          Camel can still be seen pulling heavy loads on carts in this area. 
          With such a long association with Camels, it is but usual that the 
          Department of Tourism, Art and Culture chose to hold the Camel 
          festival in Bikaner.
