Baltal
About Baltal

Baltal is beautiful valley which is enclosed by Sonamarg at an elevation of 2,743 m above sea level. Baltal is a camping ground for pilgrims, it is about 15 kms to the north of Sonamarg on the Sind River at the base of Zoji la pass in Jammu and Kashmir, India. This little valley is only a day's journey away from and provides a shorter high-altitude alternate route to the holy cave of Amarnath. At the time Amarnath Yatra, it serves as a base camp for the travelers.

Major attractions in Baltal that attracts tourist from all around the world include Baltal Hill, Zoji-La Pass, Nichinai Pass, Nichinai Pass and Yushmarg. Scenic view of the Baltal can fascinate the mind of the individual.

 
Overview of Baltal

Perched at an altitude of 2,743m, the highland pastures, Baltal serves as the base camp for pilgrims on their onward journey to Amarnath Caves, 14 km away. Renowned for its scenic beauty, Baltal meadows offers tent accommodation for both pilgrims and tourists at reasonable prices. Both pony rides or, for those who can afford, helicopter services are available to the holy Amarnath Caves. Helicopter passengers have to disembark at Panjtarni and foot it, or take a pony ride, to the cave, 5 km away. For the hikers, the 14 km distance from Baltal to Amarnath takes about 4 hours on a winding steep trail. Basic teashops are available en route.

The site is seen with terrain tents meant for the pilgrims to spend the night. Baltal is one hour away from Sonmarg on a taxi or a bus. It can also be reached from Pahalgam, 24 km away, in about 45 minutes. For hikers, it takes around 5 hours to reach Baltal from Pahalgam.

 
How To Reach Baltal

By Rail
There is no railway station in the nearby region of Baltal. Jammu is the nearest railway station which is situated at a distance of 400 km. One can get trains for various routes right from the above station. Onward journey to Baltal can be done on either bus or taxi.

By Road
Buses are available from many cities within the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

By Air
Nearest airport is at Srinagar, which is about 100 km from Baltal and is well connected with major cities in India.
