The various tourist attractions in Munnar are Rajmalai, Eravikulam National Park, Devikulam, Marayoor, Pothamedu, Devikulam, Pallivasal, Mattupetty, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Attukal, Nyayamakad, Chithirapuram, Cheeyappara, Rajmalai and Anayirankal.


Marayoor is located about 40 kms from Munnar. It is the only place in Kerala that has a natural growth of sandalwood trees. The sandalwood factory of the Forest Department, the caves with murals and relics from the New Stone Age civilization and the children's park spread across a hectare of land under the canopy of a single Banyan tree are of great interest to tourists. Thoovanam Waterfalls and Rajiv Gandhi National Park are also situated near Marayoor.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary
Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary is located about 60 kms. from Munnar, on the Tamil Nadu border. This sanctuary spread across 90.44 square kms. Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is the home of some of the rare species of flora and fauna like Elephant, Gaur, Deer, Sambar, Langur and the endangered grizzled giant squirrel, Champal squirrel and various birds like Jungle fowl, myena, laughing thrush, black bulbul, peafowl, etc.

Mattupetty is located about 15 kms from Munnar. Mattupetty is known for its highly specialised dairy farm - the Indo Swiss Livestock project. Over a 100 varieties of high yielding cattle are reared here. The visitors can visit only 3 out of the 11 cattle sheds at the farm. The Mattupetty lake and dam, just a short distance from the farm, is a very beautiful picnic spot. The sprawling Kundala tea plantations and the Kundala lake are other attractions in the vicinity. It has boating facilities too. The famous Echo point is located near the dam and offers various beautiful picnic spots.


Pothamedu offers an excellent view of the tea, coffee and cardamom plantations in Munnar. The rolling hills, the lush mountains and the breathtaking scenery here is ideal for trekking and long mountain walks.


The first Hydro-electric project in Kerala is located in Pallivasal and is also a place of immense scenic beauty.

Christ Church
The beautiful church set in the heart of the town was consecrated in 1910. adjoining cemetery has some interesting graves of the Britishers.

Tea Gardens
The lush tea gardens are the main attraction of Munnar. One can watch the process of manufacturing tea at the Tea factories here. Many factories also offer tea on sale for the visitors.

Attukal is located between Munnar and Pallivasal, about 9 km from Munnar. It is a panorama of waterfalls and rolling hills, and a feast for the eyes. The place is also ideal for long treks.


Nyayamakad is located between Munnar and Rajmala and is a land of breathtaking waterfalls. The waters cascade down a hill from a height of about 1600 metres. The enchanting surroundings make an excellent picnic spot and trekking point.

With its sleepy little cottages, bungalows, old playgrounds and courts, Chithirapuram still exudes an old world charm. This hill town is also home of the Pallayvasal Hydel Power Project, and famous for its picturesque tea plantations.

The Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls are located between Neriamangalam and Adimali on the Kochi-Madurai highway. The Cheeyappara waterfalls cascade down in seven steps. It is a real feast for the eyes. This is also a great place for trekking.

Rajmalai is the natural habitat of the Nilgiri Tahr, about 15 km from Munnar. Half of the world population of the rare mountain goat, which is becoming extinct, is now found here. The Nigiri Tahrs are today reduced to small herds found in the Eravikulam - Rajamalai region. The total numbers of Nilgiri Tahrs in Rajmalai are estimated to be 1317.


Anayirankal is a lush green carpet of tea plants. A trip on the splendid reservoir is an unforgettable experience. The Anayirankal Dam is surrounded by the Tata tea plantations and evergreen forests. It is an ideal picnic spot.

Devikulam is located about 7 kms from Munnar. This idyllic hill station with its velvet lawns, exotic flora and fauna and the cool mountain air is a rare experience. The Sita Devi Lake with its mineral waters and picturesque surroundings is a good picnic spot. The lake is also ideal for trout fishing.

Top Station (32 kms.)
It is the highest point on the Munnar Kodaikkanal road at the border of Tamil Nadu. Panoramic views of the scenic surroundings can be enjoyed from here. The area is also wel known for kurinji flowers, which blooms once in twelve years.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary (80 kms.)
Thattekad or Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary stretches over an area of 25 sq. kms., between the tributaries of river Periyar. This small sanctuary has over 270 varieties of birds and is indeed a paradise for bird watchers. Malabar grey hornbills, crimson throated barbets, rose-billed rollers, sunbirds, Malayan night herons, rusty tailed flycatchers are some of the important bird species seen here. There is also a rich variety of butterflies at the sanctuary. Leopards and bears can also be sighted here. The sanctuary is 13 kms. From Kothamangalam.

Eravikulam National Park
Eravikulam National Park is situated in the Devikulam Taluk of Idukki district in Kerala, about 15 kms north of Munnar. Eravikulam National Park was established in 1975 to protect the Nilgiri Tahr. This park is one of the wettest regions in the world. Anaimudi peak, the highest mountain peak in South India is situated in the southern region of the park. The Neelakurinji is the exotic flora found in the forests and grasslands here. The major wildlife attractions in the Eravikulam National Park are the Nilgiri Tahr. The various other animals which are found in the park are the Tigers, panthers, Wild dog, Civet cat, Jungle cat, Sloth bear, Nilgiri langur and wild boar.
