Nagarkot
About Nagarkot

Nagarkot is a village and Village Development Committee which is located about 32 kms east of Kathmandu, Nepal in Bhaktapur District in the Bagmati Zone. At the time of the 1991 Nepal census it had a population of 3,504 and had 655 houses in it. It is well-known for its sunrise view of the Himalaya including Mount Everest as well as other snow-capped peaks of the Himalayan range of eastern Nepal. It is located at an elevation of 2,195 meters, it is considered to be one of the most scenic spots in Bhaktapur District. Nagarkot also offers a panoramic view of the Kathmandu Valley. Nagarkot is an international tourist destination with amazing views of the whole Langtang range, sunrise on the mountains and sunset views.

Nagarkot is a world famous hills station which offers breathtaking views of the magnificent Himalayas, rolling hills, deep valleys, lush pine forests in a quaint rural atmosphere. It is located about 2000 m above Sea level and 28 km from Kathmandu international airport.

Situated in a strategic location, Nagarkot was an ancient fort of the Kathmandu valley to monitor external activities of another kingdoms. Later, it became a summer retreat place for the royals before becoming popular as an international hill station.

It is considered as the best viewpoint spot to enjoy the wonderful sunrise and sunset with impressive Himalayan landscapes, Nagarkot commands one of the broadest views of the snow capped Himalayas in the Kathmandu. The ranges include Numbur range, Annapurna range, Jugal range, Langtang range, Rolwaling range, Manaslu range, Mahalangur range (Everest range) and Ganesh himal range with amazing views of the Kathmandu valley and Shivapuri national park.

 
Places to Visit in Nagarkot

Nagarkot is enclosed by thickly forested hills of pine trees which give an idyllic scene. It is a rustic resort high on the northern edge of the Kathmandu valley. It is an outstanding hilltop that offers great views of Himalayas, awesome mountain scenery and the most imposing views of sunrise and sunset.

From Nagarkot, one see the wonderful views of the major Himalayan peaks of Nepal like Gauri Shankar, Manaslu, Ganesh, Choyu, Dorje Lakpa, Sisa pagma and Langtang etc. On a clear crystal day, one can even see the tip of Mt. Everest (8848 m) from here. Many tourists go to Nagarkot at afternoon, stay at one of the resorts to view early morning sunrise over the mountains.

Or one can also do pony-riding, a visit to Tamang Village, bird-watching, yoga and meditation, hiking or simply stretch out in a terrace with a vodka cocktail and listen to the noise of rattling winds, one will definitely caught up the holiday mood. Nagarkot is enclosed by thickly forested hills of pine trees which gives a peaceful escape- with only the wind and the sound of rustling leaves to disturb you.

Best Season / Time to visit Nagarkot

The weather of Nagarkot can be categories into 4 distinct seasons and the best time to visit is from October to March.

Summer
Summer (June to August) season experience dry weather and the temperatures range from 28 degree Celsius and this is considered to be the warmest. The weather at Nagarkot is different from the other part of the hill. One can have a pleasurable stay here during the summer season.

Spring
Spring (March to May) is a beautiful time to visit the city. It will be flourishing with flowers and greenery all around, one can hear the bird singing in the air. This city provides comfort, pleasure and natural wealth to who so ever visit it on any day, and in any month of the year. The maximum tourists who visit Nepal will visit this city to take back home a memorable experience.

Monsoon
Monsoon (September to November) in Nagarkot is from the end of June to the middle of September. This is the time when the days are cloudy and you may experience a little chill. The cloudy weather does not hamper the tourist rush.

Winter
Winter (December to February) experiences snowfall and the people of Kathmandu valley go to Nagarkot. The reason for this is that Nagarkot is famous for snow fall and also for sunrise. The landscape is wonderful during this season and people from Kathmandu crowd this city. The hotels during this season are full, but there is always place for everyone.

How to reach Nagarkot

By Road
To reach Nagarkot, it is most convenient from Katmandu, Chitwan and other cities that are connected by road. There are buses very often from Kathmandu to Nagarkot. These buses ply in more frequency during the season time. During the off season one will need to take a bus from Kathmandu to Bhaktapur and change a bus to reach Nagarkot. The journey from Bhaktapur takes an hour and a half. There are tourist shuttle buses that operate from the international airport which is in the city of Bhaktapur. This journey takes about 40 minutes from the city centre. The bus passes through the tiny villages along meandering mountain roads before arriving at Nagarkot.

By Air
To reach Nagarkot, the nearest airport facilities are only available at Bharatpur and Kathmandu. International flights land at Kathmandu and there are also shuttle flights to Bharatpur. From these destinations one has to travel by road to reach Nagarkot.

On Foot
Trekking is a very exciting way to get to Nagarkot. One can follow the route from Kathmandu to Sundarijal through Chisopani. First one has to drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal, and then follow the route by climbing up through the mixed forest to Chisopani Danda. If the day is clear one can get a good view of the mountains and the Kathmandu valley from East to West. The Chisopani- Nagarkot trail is a climb of above 2000 meters.
