Deorali Orchid Sanctuary in Sikkim is famous for its rare and exensive collection of orchids. The important feature of the sanctuary is the fact that the orchids in the reserve vary depending upon the change in seasons.

Orchids are famous for their heady and sensuous fragrance. They are lovely flowers, often found in brilliant colors and attractive shapes. The tropical, humid climate of the north-east region of India is perfect for these orchids. Orchid lovers will definitely be charmed by the variety and beauty of the orchids in the Deorali Orchid Sanctuary. The Deorali Orchid Sanctuary is situated adjacent to the Namgyal Institute, Gangtok in Sikkim.

Of 454 species of orchids known to exist in the world, 200 species are found in the sanctuary. A visit to the sanctuary, especially during the blooming season, is a treat for the eyes. The blooming season extends from months of April to May, July to August and October to November.

In addition to orchids, about 40 genus of rhododendron are also seen in the sanctuary. Deorali Orchid Sanctuary and the Orchidarium situated off the main road to Rangpo, are the two most prominent places to visit for orchid aficionados.

Besides preserving the diversity of orchid species, Deorali Orchid Sanctuary is an ecological hotspot. Along with Kyongnosia Alpine Sanctuary, Deorali forms the two most popular sanctuaries to visit in Sikkim. Kyongnosia Sanctuary is best place to spot some rare, endangered ground orchids and rhododendrons.

 
Location of Orchid Sanctuary

Deorali Orchid Sanctuary is located next to the Namgyal Institute, is known for its wide collection of orchids. Of 454 species of orchids, 200 species are found in this sanctuary. Most of these orchids are native to Sikkim. For nature lovers, a visit to the Orchid Sanctuary would surely be an interesting event.

Orchid sanctuary is situated just below the institute of Tibetology. The sanctuary is well-known for its rare and extensive collection of orchids.

 
Best Time to Visit Orchid Sanctuary

Gangtok is blessed with a mild and moderate climate. The temperature at this place varies from 25 °C in summer to 3 °C in winter. This region gets its monsoon showers during the period of June to September. Apart from its serene natural beauty, this place has quite a few tourist attractions as well.

One such place that draws huge footfalls, is the Orchid Sanctuary. The best time for visiting the Orchid Sanctuary at Gangtok is the month of April and early May in addition to the period between September and December. Positioned beside the Institute of Tibetology, the famous Orchid Sanctuary is famous for its exceptional and extensive assortment of orchids, which keeps varying from season to season.

How To Reach There

As Gangtok is well connected by air, rail and road, tourists coming to the Orchid Sanctuary Gangtok would reach the place easily.

By Rail
Lying 125 kms from Gangtok, New Jalpaiguri is the nearest rail station.

By Road
Gangtok is well linked with Darjeeling, Siliguri and Kalimpong, via the national highway of 31A. Buses ply regularly within Gangtok, as well as between Siliguri and Gangtok. These buses are run by Sikkim Nationalized Transport. Tourists may also avail of the private buses, taxis and jeeps from Bagdogra and Siliguri.

By Air
For air-travelers, Bagdora located 124 kms from Gangtok, is the nearest airhead.
