Eighteen years after Shah Jahan became emperor, Mumtaz Mahal, the
darling wife of Shah Jahan died at the age of 39 giving birth to her
14th child in 1630. The emperor went into pain and promised to built a
magnificent tomb in her memory, unlike any other monument of the
world. It was named the Taj Mahal, a superior monument in pure marble.
It take about 22 years for the construction of this monument by 20,000
labourers. The height of this superior monument is 187 feet at the
central dome. The marble and other items were brought in from
all over India and central Asia for the construction of Taj Mahal.

Rajasthan, Turquoise from Tibet, Sapphire and Lapez Lazuli from
Bundelkhand, Jasper from Punjab, Amethyst and Onyx from Persia,
Crystal and Jade from China. The skilled artisans inlaid the white
marble structure with valuable stones and built a lacy stone screen
around the graves of the emperor and his darling wife. It is a belief
that Taj Mahal was designed by Ustad Isa Afandi. This monument was a
symbol of Shah Jahan's everlasting love for his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
