Tamil is an ancient Dravidian language that belongs to the
Southern Dravidian subfamily. It is one of the five ancient
languages of India, which is about 2,000 years old but
preserves its originality. The earliest Tamil inscriptions
date from 200 BC. The Tamil language has its own script
descended from the southern Indian Pallava script and old
Brahmi script. It uses syllabic alphabets written left to
right in horizontal lines. There are several regional and
caste dialects of Tamil that distinction between the literary
and colloquial forms of the language. The main dialects
include Sri Lanka, Northern, Western, Central, Eastern and
Southern Tamil. Tamil is spoken differently in different
regions but it follows the uniform style of writing. Like the
other Dravidian languages, it is characterized by its use of
retroflex consonants and by its agglutinative grammar, where
suffixes are used to mark noun class, number, and case, verb
tense and other grammatical categories. Tamil has gone through
three different stages to reach its present form known as
                  ancient (200 BC to 700), medieval (700 - 1500) and modern
                  (1500 to the present) stage.
