Trivandrum or Thiruvananthapuram is situated at the southernmost tip of India. Trivandrum is the modern capital city of Kerala. It is bounded by the
Arabian Sea in the west, Tamil Nadu and wooded highlands of the Western Ghats
on the east and northeast. Trivandrum covers an area of 2192 square kms and situated at sea level. The city is built across seven hill and still retains its regal ambience with a number of colonial and traditional buildings. Trivandrum is enriched with a long shoreline with internationally renowned beaches, historic monuments, backwater stretches and a rich cultural heritage. Today, Thiruvananthapuram is home to many educational, cultural and scientific institutions. Trivandrum was earlier a part of the former princely state of
Travancore. The climate in Trivandrum is tropical. The temperature here ranges from 18 to 36 degree Celsius. |

| Tourist attractions in Trivandrum |

The main tourist attractions in Trivandrum are the beaches, temples, backwater
areas and museums. The main beaches in Trivandrum are Shanghumukham
Beach, Kovalam Beach and Varkala Beach. The Shanghumukham Beach is a favourite place for the sunset viewers. The main attractions of this beach are an indoor recreation club, the Matsya Kanyaka (a gigantic, 35 m long sculpture of a mermaid) and a restaurant shaped like a starfish. The main backwater areas of Trivandrum are Veli Tourist village and Akkulam
Tourist village. The most famous temple of Trivandrum is the beautiful Sree Padmanabha Swami temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
This temple is perfect blend of Kerala and Dravidian styles of sculpture and architecture. The other main place of tourist interest is the Museum complex.

Ponmudi is the only hill station which is located about 61
kms. from Trivandrum. It is an idyllic hill resort with narrow, winding pathways and cool, green wooded environs.
Ponmudi is well known for its beautiful mountain flowers, exotic butterflies, rivulets, springs and trekking trails. |

Anjengo (10 kms.)
This small historical town is set amidst
Lakshadweep Sea and Anjengo Kayal. The British East
India Company established a factory here in 1673 and also built a fot with the
permission of Queen of Attingal in 1695. the beach, relics of the fort and
flagstaff, tombs of Dutch and British are some places of interest.
Aruvikara (16 kms.)
It is famous for the ancient Bhagavathi temple. The stream
in front of the temple has large fishes, which are fed by the devotees visiting
the shrine. Ponmudi (61 kms.)
Ponmud, an idyllic hill resort is known for its bracing
climate, tea plantaions and scenic splendour. The deep forests trails are ideal
for hiking and trekking.
Papanasham Bech:
The crescent shaped beach is considered to be very sacred,
as it is believed that one is absolved of his sin by taking a dip in the sea
water here here. The red laterite cliffs along the beach enchances the beauty
of the beach. The scluded Thiruvambady Beach near the North Cliff is worth visiting.
Sivagiri Mutt:
It is the final resting place of Sree Narayana Guru, one of
the most illustrious spiritual leader and social reformer of Kerala.
Kappil Beach:
The idyllic site at
the confluence of the beach and backwaters is noted for its scenic charm and
tranquility. Boating facilities at the backwaters are provided at the
Priyadarshini Boat Club
Kerala – Cuisine
Kerala’s mouth watering cuisine is mildly flavoured and
gently cooked. Pootu, is one of the favourite breakfast dish. It is a rice
flour dough which is layered with grated coconut and steamed in hollow bamboo
cylinder. Idlis and dosas are also very popular in Kerala. During the Onam
festival season opt for Onam lunch with thoren or kaalanor pachadi. Some other
vegetable gravy dish with coconut and yogurt. Olen, is a gravy dish made of ash
gourd and dry beans with dominant flavour of coconut milk. No meal in the State is complete without rice. Bananas are
also very popular in Kerala cuisine. Stew made of chicken and potatoes and
Meenvevichathu or fish in red chilly sauce are some of the favourite
non-vegetarian dishes. |

Shopping |
|
Kerala is also known for its traditional crafts, the most
notable being intricately crafted ivory products, carved wooden containers and
furniture, handwoven textiles, bronzes, masks of the characters from the
classical dances, coir products etc. Cashews, spices, tea and coffee produced
in the State are also some of the most important items on the shopping list of
the visitors.
M.G. Road extending from East Fort to Palayam,
Chalia Bazar, Connemara Market and Palayam are some of the important shopping
areas of the city. Shopping Centres:
The Handicrafts Emporium run by the Handicrafts development
Corporation of Kerala is located behind the Government Secretariat, near the
British Library. It is worth visiting for buying quality handicrafts at fixed
prices. Besides the Government run crafts emporias, there are
several shops in and around MG Road where one may buy exotic craft items. The Khadi Gramodhyog
Bhavan (opposite Ayurvedic College, MG Road) is a fine place to buy traditional
Kasava saree. These are handwoven and are very popular among women shoppers.

By Air:
Trivandrum is well connected by air to various major cities like Delhi,
Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai and various other cities of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The
Trivandrum international airport receives and as well as
operates international flights to Colombo, Maldives, Dubai, Sharjah, Kuwait, Bahrain and Singapore.
By Rail:
There are direct trains from Trivandrum to all the major
towns of Kerala and various other cities in India like
Mumbai, Bangalore, Guwahati, Kanyakumari, Chennai, Cochin and
Delhi, etc.
By Sea:
One of the most attractive aspects of Trivandrum is the predominance of rivers, backwaters and lakes. You can travel at a vast distance by water, at a leisurely pace and through beautiful lush scenery, a unique experience.
