Information about the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a world famous bird sanctuary and an ornithologist’s paradise. This bird sanctuary is located about 16 kms from Kottayam on the banks of the Vemband lake in Kerala. This bird sanctuary covers an area of 14 acres. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is famous all over the world for its birds. Set amidst the lush wooded land, the sanctuary provide the close view of the variety of migratory birds, that come from Himalayas or far places like

Siberia. The bird sanctuary is an amazing paradise of mangrove forests, emerald green paddy fields and coconut groves. The landscape interspersed with interesting waterways and canals has added beauty of White Lilies.

Some migratory birds migrate during the winter from across the world in the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary including the Siberian stork. The migratory birds which visit the sanctuary are Siberian Cranes, Egrets, Darters, Herons, Parrots, Larks, Flycatchers, Wood Beetles and Teals. Some local birds which are found at this sanctuary are Water fowls, Cuckoos, Owls, Egrets, Herons, Teals, Water ducks, Kingfishers, Golden-Backed Woodpeckers and paradise Fly-catchers.

Best Time To Visit Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

The best time to visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is between June and August. If you want to view the migratory birds then the best time is from November to February. A cruise along the Vembanad lake is the best way to visit the sanctuary.

How to Reach Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

By Air:
The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (70 kms).

By Rail:
The nearest railhead is Kottayam, about 14 kms.

By Road:
