Information about the Parambikulam Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary

Parambikulam Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary is situated between the Anamala ranges of Tamil Nadu and the Nelliampathy ranges of Kerala on the majestic Western Ghats in Kerala. Three dams have been built here by the Tamil Nadu government under the Parambikulam - Aliyar project. The reservoir harbours several varieties of aquatic fauna. The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 285 square kms. Parambikulam lake is spread over an area pf 21.2 square

km, Thoonacadavu Lake is spread over an area of 4.33 square km, and Parivarippallam is spread over an area of 2.89 square km. Several streams originate from the hill ranges and flow down westward to join the Chalakud river.

Vegetation in the Parambikulam Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary
The vegetation in the Parambikulam Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary consists of tropical evergreen forest, semi evergreen forest, southern evergreen and moist deciduous forest and southern dry deciduous forest. The climate is ideally suited for the growth of teak. Large scale teak plantation through artificial regeneration has been encouraged in the sanctuary and managed in such a way as to restore the forest to its original status. A giant teak, about 40 m high and 6.4 m in girth and known as Kannimaram, the first tree stands as the monument of the past. This tree is said to be the Asia's largest and stands about 5 km from Thoonacadavu, the headquarters of Parambikulam.

The major wildlife animals found in the Parambikulam Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary are the Bonnet macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Loris, Gaur, Nilgiri Tahr, sambar, Barking deer, Spotted deer, Wild boar, Lion-tailed macaque, Jungle cat, Civet, Mongoose, fox, bear, elephant, tiger, leopard, pangoline etc. The crocodiles, varanus, pond terapin, cane turtle, gecko, skunk, chameleon, snakes like king cobra, spectacled cobra, krait, viper, python, green keel back, rat snake, vine snake, fishes like Aral, baral, Vattudi, Thilopia, Noovi, mooshu, Poochutti, Kollottie, exyprius, Taral, birds like darter, little cormorant, black eagle, lesser adjutant stork, black capped kingfisher, great Indian hornbill, broad billed roller, black woodpecker can also be seen in the Parambikulam Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary.

The nearest railway station is located at Pollachi which is about 60 kms.
