About
Kedar Kantha |
Kedarkantha peak is situated in the mountains of the tons
river valley, it is a beautiful rounded peak ; easily
accessible anytime of the year. In the winters it snows in
this valley and hence views from the summit are very pleasing.
The trek goes through the Govind national park and gives you
ample time to soak in the flora and fauna of this protected
area. The summit lies at an elevation of 3040m and reaching
the top is very satisfying as you are rewarded with views of
banderpooch, black, swargarohini and ranglana peaks.
Har-Ki-Doon trek, renamed and re-designed as Kedar kantha trek
since 2006 in an annual event in YHAI calendar. True to the
objectives of YHAI, the trek provides a great opportunity for
adventure, scenic beauty, and a firsthand experience of remote
villages of Gharwal Himalayas, in spite of the fact that the
trek has been shortened by eliminating the Har-ki-doon for the
convenience of the trekkers.
Kedar Kantha lies in the state of Uttarakhand, bordering
Himachal Pradesh. The outdoor landscapes are beyond
description in beauty. There are attractive small towns,
unending and lush green meadows and amazing views of some of
Himalayan giants. The people are very friendly and the culture
and practice of the locals are very unique. The snaking trail
on this trip takes one through rich and verdant forests of
maple, pines and chestnut. The sun kissed snow path with the
trees shadow boxing with each other is a sight to watch. The
trail that is tough in places also offers potential of
catching fleeting sights of the mysterious Himalayan wildlife.
The summit of this trip though remains the perfect sunset that
one can almost reach out to. The sun, almost in slow motion
leaves a shining trail through the sky before descending into
oblivion behind the impressive snow capped peaks. |

Description of Kedar Kantha Trek |
The
trek which starts at Sankhri is best described as a poetry of
meadows, flowers and landscapes of snowcapped mountain peaks.
After the rains, this trek is a botanist's heaven with the
bugyals turning into abundant wildflower beds. The first halt on
the route is about 4 km from Sankhri is Juda Talab which is a
small lake amidst woods, picture perfect for camping.
Day 2 calls for a reasonable amount of trekking uphill (about 5
km) to the huge bugyal at the base of Kedarkanta. On a clear day
this is a vantage point to view the Changsheel range. If one is
not engrossed with the striking flora, there is ample
opportunity to enjoy a spectacular sunset here.
A short climb on Day 3 takes one to the cairns at the summit
which is a gateway to the long green ridge walk that offers 360
deg. views of nearby villages, the peaks of Black Peak,
Baraadsar, Swargarohini, and Bandar Poonch as well as wonderful
views of the valley. A walk of about 6 km leads to the campsite
at Dhunda.
The final leg of the trek is about 8 km to Sankhri which
traverses little waterfalls and dense forest that are a complete
contrast to the ridge and the bugyals. There are no rest houses
on the route. |
