Day 03: Leh Excursion (Shey, Thikse)

Today we explore the magnificent local monasteries of Shey and Thikse. Shey monastery is situated on the eastern bank of the Indus. Shey was the royal residence and was located at an important vantage point in the Indus valley. According to tradition, it was the seat of power of the pre-Tibetan kings. A 7.5 metre high copper statue of Buddha, plated with gold, and the largest of its kind, is installed here. After the visit of Shey monastery we visit Thikse. Thikse is one of the most imposing monastery in Ladakh. The monastery has 12 stories, 10 temples, a nunnery and 60 lamas in residence. It contains numerous stupas, statues, tankhas, wall painting and a large pillar engraved with the teaching of Buddha. We can also see here a collection of Tibetan scripts.

Day 04: Leh - Stok

Today after having breakfast we drive to Stok from there we start our trekking tour. The attraction of Stok remains the palace of Stok which is 200 years old. The palace and museum at Stok is a showpiece for the royal tankhas, royal crown, dresses, coins, precious stones and turquoise head dresses. Today we visit the Stok Palace.

Day 05: Stok - Zingchen - Markha

Today we start our trekking excursion from Stok. First of all we cross the Zingchen River on our way to Ganda La pass (4680 M). The surrounding barren landscape lies in shadow of the mighty Karakoram Range. Following the Markha river we head east and up to Markha monastery, well known for the traditional buddhist paintings. We visit this monastery and have an overnight stay in Markha itself.

Day 06: Markha - Nimaling - Shang

Today we start our excursion by starting from Markha Valley in the Zanskar mountain range. This northern end of Zanskar Range is also the home to the blue sheep and ibex, which can be spotted high on the valley slopes. We follow the valley and climb to shepherd huts on the Nimaling Plains (4720 M) before crossing the Kongmaru La pass (5200 M). Here we enjoy the superb mountain panorama and then move towards Shang. You have an overnight stay in Shang.

The trekking would not be a tiresome as we descend through the gorges of wonderfully colored rocks to Martselang, where we meet our Jeeps to visit the famous Hemis monastery. The construction of this massive structure began in 1565 under Akbar's reign and continued till the time of his grandson's reign, Shah Jahan who built the impressive imperial quarters and mosque. After the visit of Agra Fort we proceed to visit the most beautiful monument of India, the Taj Mahal, an enduring monument to love, with a continually fulfilling beauty. It was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1631-52, as a tomb and memorial to his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal (Jewel of the Palace), who died at the age of 39 giving birth to her 14th child. We spend enough time at Taj Mahal to take this impressive memory home.
